Pulling variable data from Arduino hardware into Matlab

Hi guys,

I hope you can help me. I am new to Matlab & programming in general. I am wanting to pull data from a variable in Arduino into Matlab so I can use this data to display some information. Can I pull data directly from a variable I have defined on the Arduino board (into an array perhaps?) or should I be reading data directly from the pin? I so how do I go about doing so? What are the different ways in which data can be pulled? I have searched a few answers already but haven't seen this asked anywhere so hope you can help.
