How do I account for area out side nodes using the finite difference technique?

I need to write a program using the finite difference method. I know how to do it using an array. The issue is that the area I need to apply it to is not directly on the nodes, but also a outside the nodes. I know how far outside the nodes but not how to implement it. Does anyone have any thoughts? Thanks
