“El Centro de Investigación en Matemática Pura y Aplicada” (CIMPA) (Research Center in Pure and Applied Mathematics) was founded in 1997 to create a research unit to focus on theoretical and fundamental mathematics and its applications. The creation of CIMPA responds to a long research trajectory in the School of Mathematics at the University of Costa Rica, where almost all of the country's mathematics research resides.
In recent years, there has been a boost to mathematical research at the University. It has also developed a series of activities that enabled CIMPA's position as the most important center for mathematical research in Central America. CIMPA's research has had a very positive impact in mathematics from the University, in Costa Rica, and internationally. The team consists of distinguished researchers with publications in internationally-recognized journals and who participate in national and international conferences around the world. CIMPA recently offered a course to the Bank of Costa Rica called "Data analysis and finance applications using MATLAB."
