Bosch Demonstrates Cosimulation for Virtual Automated Driving
The Testing System Allows for Hardware- and Software-in-the-Loop Simulation
“We are creating different scenarios and simulating high-fidelity vehicle dynamics…. We have RoadRunner for the creation of effective test scenarios.”
Key Outcomes
- Developed a modular and scalable system to test virtual driving scenarios that allows for hardware- and software-in-the-loop simulation
- Created effective and realistic test scenarios with RoadRunner
- Shared data between testing platforms for cosimulation scenarios using MATLAB and Simulink tools
Bosch Global Software Technologies (BGSW) is a 100%-owned subsidiary of Robert Bosch GmbH, one of the world’s leading global suppliers of technology and services. With over 23,000 associates, it is Bosch’s largest software development center outside Germany.
Software and Digital Solutions (SDS) is an independent unit within BGSW that delivers software and services to customers across the globe. Its work includes high-fidelity modeling of complex and unexpected traffic scenarios encountered during autonomous driving. Building these models requires integrating multiple tools, and synchronizing the exchange of data between these platforms for cosimulation can be difficult.
To model these driving environments, the team uses MATLAB®, RoadRunner, and CarMaker® for Simulink®. SDS uses CarMaker to model vehicle dynamics models and RoadRunner to generate traffic scenarios, thereby creating an environment that CarMaker alone cannot anticipate. Additionally, the team has introduced middleware that enables generating scenarios in RoadRunner and exporting them into CarMaker, enhancing the integration and functionality of these platforms.
In this step-by-step fashion, the middleware synchronizes the time steps of the two platforms, allowing for realistic cosimulation of driving dynamics. Bosch tested both third-party and MATLAB tools to create the middleware and intends to build a solution in the future that uses only MATLAB and Simulink tools.
