SMALL OBJECT DETECTION IN INFRARED IMAGE

I am working on a project of detecting small object in an infrared image and i need to use the max/mean , max/median filters , i am having a hardtime getting it. can anyone help me with some more explainations on how i can write codes for the two filters .
