MATLAB doesn't want to start ("License Manager Error -8" and "Licensing Error -8.523"). What should I do?

I've already seen the help that says to check into the license.dat file located in directory etc. But in that directory, I don't have the mentionned file. What can I do to make it working correctly?

Was your license provided to you by your university? If so then they might be running a license server that needs to be communicated with.

This error is not one that would be expected for stand-alone licenses such as if you purchase a normal license directly from Mathworks.
