anomalous vertical lines when saving images from figures of volumetric data

I'm getting anomalous, thin, black vertical lines and black specks when I print volumetric data figures to image files.

I'm visualizing 3D volumetric data using vol3d_v2. The matlab figure looks great, but when I print the figure to file, the lines and specks show up.

I've tried to print as jpeg, png, tiff, eps, and bmp. All produce the anomalies.
