NexSense: Developing a Portable Chemical Detector Using MathWorks Toolsets
Alison Lucie, Selex ES
Ross McLaren, Selex ES
Selex ES, in conjunction with Owlstone, has developed a novel hand-held device for the detection of toxic industrial chemicals, exploiting the benefits of Ultra High Field Asymmetric Ion Mobility Spectrometry (UH-FAIMS). The MATLAB® product family has been used extensively in the development of this product—from early concept development (sensor performance modelling and early investigation of algorithmic concepts), through extensive large-scale analysis of training data and algorithm prototyping, to the deployment of the data processing algorithms onto the system’s architecture. The use of MATLAB in all stages of the development allowed vertical integration within a single environment and a fast and flexible prototyping capability. With the support of MathWorks consultants, unit test frameworks were developed to facilitate accelerated implementation and test of changes to the algorithms; this enabled a short development timescale from development to limited early production.
