Keynote: The Roadmap for Software-Defined Vehicles and Disruptive Technologies
“Software-defined vehicle” has become a buzzword and the real question is, how it should be addressed? Is it a “revolution” or “evolution?” How can tool vendors work together to help? And what is the role of the cloud and emerging technologies like generative AI? In this talk, explore three technical approaches—software factory, virtualization/simulation, and service-oriented architectures—that are key to answering this question. Until now, these approaches have often been pursued independently and in limited ways. That leads to inefficiencies as well as friction between systems engineering and software engineering teams. Learn how model-based approaches can evolve and scale in a coordinated and synergistic fashion to revolutionize the value of software in the vehicle and how the cloud has evolved from a general technology to a focused engineering enabler—taking a collaborative, multi-vendor approach.
Richard Rovner

Richard Rovner is vice president of marketing for MathWorks. He leads the worldwide marketing organization of 400+ people responsible for strategic planning; product and technology strategy; industry, higher education, and field marketing; digital marketing and creative services; corporate communications; and marketing planning and operations. He spent the first part of his career developing applications in computer vision and image processing, machine learning and artificial intelligence, simulation, and statistical analysis. He has a B.S. in applied mathematics from Carnegie Mellon University and an M.S. in computer science from George Washington University.

Keynote: Advancing Electrification: Innovations, Challenges, and Research Directions
The automotive industry has navigated a period of unprecedented change that has brought new technologies to the market at a very rapid pace, enhancing the safety, performance, connectivity, and energy efficiency of passenger and commercial vehicles. Electrification of vehicle propulsion systems has played a very important role in recent developments—but while battery electric vehicles have become a clearly established market segment, consumer demand, EV infrastructure development, and market and supply chain forces are likely to limit significant growth of this specific segment. In this session, explore possible future directions for development of a broad portfolio of electrified propulsion system solutions.
Dr. Giorgio Rizzoni
Ohio State University
Giorgio Rizzoni, the Ford Motor Company Chair in Electromechanical Systems, is a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering (MAE) and electrical and computer engineering (ECE) at The Ohio State University. He has served as director of Ohio State’s Center for Automotive Research since 1999. He also leads the ARPA-E NEXTCAR program, with the aim of advancing energy efficiency in connected and automated vehicles, and OSU’s Advanced Air Mobility efforts.
Giorgio received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Michigan. He was recognized by the MAE Department with the Distinguished Graduate Faculty Award in 2016. He is also the recipient of three Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching awards in the MAE Department, in addition to the College of Engineering Stanley and Peter and Clara Scott Award for Excellence in Engineering Education. Giorgio is a Fellow of IEEE (2004), SAE (2005), and ASME (2022).

General Session: Generative AI in the Engineer’s Toolbox
GenAI is becoming a key technology for engineers doing research and development. While the capabilities of the technology continue to expand, practitioners are learning how to best integrate GenAI with their workflows and get the most value from the tools. MathWorks is investing in copilots that enhance products like MATLAB® and Simulink®, combining the benefits of high-level tools for algorithm development and Model-Based Design with the speed and productivity gains of AI assistants.

Seth DeLand is product marketing manager at MathWorks for generative AI. His focus is augmenting engineering and scientific workflows with generative AI. He has also held roles at MathWorks as product marketing manager for machine learning and numerical optimization products and in technical support. Prior to joining MathWorks, Seth earned his B.S. and M.S. in mechanical engineering from Michigan Technological University. His research was in mathematical modeling techniques for selective catalytic reduction on diesel vehicles to reduce NOx emissions.

General Session: A Modeling Framework for Propulsion Controls Development at Ford Motor Company
Learn about Ford Motor Company’s simulation framework (VMAPS: Vehicle Motion and Propulsion Simulation) used to develop and validate the vehicle propulsion control system, which is distributed across multiple ECU modules. This simulation environment is hosted in Simulink®, supporting execution in SIL and HIL across a virtual/live CAN network. The vehicle models are built in Simulink, S-functions, and other commercial simulation tools. Users can interface with the environment through various commercial and proprietary tools to run automated testing over hundreds of test cases on a distributed computing platform.

Ford Motor Company
Aaron Diachun is a supervisor at Ford Motor Company in vehicle controls working on the VMAPS simulation environment. His 30+ year career has revolved around using simulation tools to design and validate powertrain systems, focusing on fuel economy, performance, and electronic controls. He has also held positions in transmission testing, IT CAE tool management, and connected vehicle data analytics. He has an extensive background in writing MATLAB scripting and functions to automate the build and execution of Simulink models. Aaron holds a B.S. in mechanical engineering from Case Western Reserve University.

Measuring Software Architecture “Goodness” Using System Composer
This presentation introduces an architecture-based validation technique aimed at enhancing the model-based development of embedded systems. It emphasizes the importance of systematically measuring the “goodness” of individual components and overall system architecture to achieve targeted outcomes using metrics as a feedback mechanism. This presentation covers various metrics for evaluating software architecture, comparing design choices, and highlighting trade-offs with practical examples. With a focus on reducing cruft and technical debt and ensuring high-quality, cost-effective real-time systems, this technique uses System Composer™ as a tool for architecture analysis, enabling temporal checks, system simulation, and the generation of key artifacts like UML diagrams. This ensures that local design choices align with global system behavior, fulfilling features, requirements, and architectural constraints and offering insights into model-driven approaches for developing robust embedded software architectures.
Andrew Novak

Andrew Novak is a technical advisor and the US systems and software manager for common application components at Cummins Power Generation. He has worked with organizations at all levels of engineering maturity, applying hands-on and practical approaches to problem-solving. Andrew possesses extensive experience across the full development life cycle, including system design, subsystem design, hardware and software design, model-in-the-loop, hardware-in-the-loop, hardware and software integration, system integration, and system-of-systems integration. He holds multiple patents in in automotive and industrial control systems. He is also a first-generation farmer managing a beef and seed crop farm in Southwest Missouri, where he maintains all of the farm’s on-road and off-road equipment. Andrew holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Minnesota.

Mark Ekblad is president at nTrolus, Inc. His expertise spans software architecture, embedded systems, battery thermal management systems, AI-driven algorithms, and large-scale industrial automation. A visionary technology leader with extensive experience in model-based systems, software, and control engineering, he has led multimillion-dollar projects across various industries, including aerospace, semiconductors, and industrial automation, developing groundbreaking control and optimization solutions. As a senior member of IEEE, he has contributed patents, publications, and leadership roles, as well as cochairing the SEMI Equipment Control Task Force. Mark holds advanced degrees in aerospace engineering and mathematics from the University of Minnesota, with additional doctoral work in control science and dynamical systems.
