Linearization of RF Power Amplifiers – Linking Simulation and Measurements on Physical Devices
Markus Lörner, Rohde & Schwarz
Efficiency and easy linearization are the key differentiators for modern RF front ends and PAs, while frequency coverage, gain, RF performance are defined by the target application. Linearization using digital predistortion (DPD) is a key enabler to use highly non-linear PA's close to saturation, where they offer best efficiency.
Engineers in PA design need to understand best possbile DUT capabilities and performance using optimal DPD - a feature available with Rohde & Schwarz. Once the devices get introduced to real designs, system engineers look for realistic DPD algorithms which can be implemented with affordable effort. MATLAB® simulation, together with built-in features of the latest T&M instrumentation, allow system engineers to derive the model with user-defined complexity. Verification of the model using a wideband signals such as 5G proof the DPD model versus the best possible behavior. This ensures proper modeling and defining of DPD in real-time applications to achieve maximum linearity and efficiency.
