Movie playback broken in Windows 8.1?

Only the first frame shows up, it is offset and blurry, matlab remains busy, but nothing else happens. I can close the figure. This doesn't happen on my other machines. Anyone know what is wrong?

Another person had this problem but I can't find his question anymore--he disabled the Aero theme and it worked, but Windows 8.1 has no such interfacial options.

I am using Matlab 2013b
