Real Time Communication MATLAB n PLC

Is anyone here is familiar with real communication between PLC and MATLAB? How can I communicate between them other than RS 232 with protocols like modbus tcp/ip ? Is ethernet possible wthout a client?
Thanks,

MATLAB is capable of RS232, TCP/IP, UDP, GBIP etc., by the use of the Instrument Control Toolbox. Click here
Now you havn't mentioned: 1. What protocols your PLC device support 2. Perhaps the model and make of the PLC device?

Hello Suneesh, 1.I'm using siemens S7 1200- PLC and I want to use MODBUS TCP/IP protocol. Is there anyway that I can communicate between PLC ( controller here) and MATLAB/Simulink( system/plant here) over MODBUS TCP/IP ? Do I need any client for that?
I have seen some DSP cards that had MODBUS TCP installed on a chip.
