How can I remove the background of a particular image?

I want to remove the background of the corresponding MRI image. Please suggest the coding steps.

Find the background and save it into a binary image called mask. Then define what "remove" means, keeping in mind that an image has to be rectangular - you can't have oval images. If you just want to set the background to some particular value, like 0, then:

grayImage(mask) = theValueYouWant;
