Try export_fig(): http://matlab.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ#How_do_I_save_my_figure.2C_axes.2C_or_image.3F_I.27m_having_trouble_with_the_built_in_MATLAB_functions.
or try getframe().

I would not use the cd function. I'd use fullfile() as per the FAQ.
fullFileName = fullfile(folder, baseFileName);
The FAQ explains further why this is the recommendation: http://matlab.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ#Where_did_my_file_go.3F_The_risks_of_using_the_cd_function.

Sure. I was not trying to imply that they should change the Current Folder for just that one operation, but I have noticed that some users do not seem to realize that the Current Folder can be changed at all, yet their work would be much simpler if they simply changed to a more convenient directory.
