Loading excel file and creating variables for analysis

I am brand dew to MATLAB and need some hep on creating variables for my datat file. I am wondering how I load an excel file into MATLAB and then from that data table extract only certain values I want to work with and assign them appropriate varibles (vectors/matrices) so that I can then statistically analyze the data.

Look at "fread" and "readmatrix" in the help documentation inside of MATLAB. That should be a good starting point.
