Scrollbar in editor is almost useless now

I installed R2023a on a new mac, and now this very annoying new behavior: if I grab the scrollbar to drag up or down the script, it selects all the text between start and end scrolling points. It also seems almost impossible to grab the horizonal scroll bar - if I drag the input cursor out past the displayed text, the scrollbar appears as the screen shifts over.. but then it disappears! Even when I succeed in grabbing it, it simultaneously grabs the underlying text (like with the vertical scroll). How is this supposed to work? I guess I should be using a track pad (then why even include the scrollbar if it's unusable)? There must be a solution..

It seems TMW can't leave well enough alone; they seem intent on destroying the editor entirely in the name of "progress". I gather it has to do with replacing a java implementation with another, but the changes I've seen even in R2021b are for the worse and the complaints such as this have scared me off going any further for at least the time being.
I can't yet even figure out just what it is doing, specifically, but the behavior with the debugger is also different and not helpful...I guess the thing of having the cursor point at the RHS of an assignment statement instead of the whole line is supposed to be of some value, but all it does is make the code harder to read afaict (besides confusing the user who has no idea what is going on, anyways)...
