Hi, could I get some guidence on how to type this out, wouldn't it be: x1(t) = 1/2-1/pi*sin(4*pi/t)

You are, of course, right Walter. However, I am (still) skeptical if that is what exactly OP wants.
We can infer this, but as OP has not specified any information about that, thus I thought of providing this as an alternative.
If OP does not provide any more information, I will move my answer to a comment.

Your answer is probably what they were looking for ;-)

syms t
x_1(t) = 1/2-1/pi*sin(4*pi*t)

Well, let us try it.
Try #1:
x_1(t) = 1/2-1/pi*sin(4*pi*t)
Unrecognized function or variable 't'.
That fails.

Try #2:
t = 0:.1:1; %some specific numeric t values
x_1(t) = 1/2-1/pi*sin(4*pi*t)
Array indices must be positive integers or logical values.
That fails as well.
Looks like, Yes, you do need syms t in order to write that formula.
