Some plot objects disappear when I zoom in 2016b

I have a function that plots a diagram then uses "hold on" and plots some markers and text, then "hold off". In 2015b I could use the zoom magnifier and all plot objects showed up. In 2016b when I use that same plot function and then I zoom in, my line plots and numerical text show up but my markers disappear.

Notice that the yellow makers disappear after using the magnifier zoom tool. Also, my opengl settings are already globally set to use hardware opengl and my graphics card is listed as fully supported when I use "opengl info" to view my settings. Also, I have the settings of theis figure already set to use painters vector format.

% Try two ways:
% 1. Enlarge markersize
% 2. Play with
set(gcf,'renderer','opengl')
% or
set(gcf,'renderer','painters'),
% either must work for your goal

The zoom works correctly if I switch to opengl, but then the whole figure is not in painters (vector) rendering anymore and is not publication quality. (The figure must be publication quality).
