imhist in image processing

Hello,
I am trying to check how imhist works, by plotting a graph for imhist taking a small 8x8 matrix with different values, I am not sure what x-axis and y-axis represents after the graph is plotted. From my understanding, x-axis represents the intensities of the pixels. what does y-axis represent?
Please explain.
