How to use symbolic variable in another equation?

I have stored symbolic expression in 'xg'.
Now I want to perform symbolic operation using ode45() on an equation in which I have 'xg' .
How do I write that equation in terms of 'xg', such that it takes the sybolic expression stored in 'xg' .
