save function in matlab

How can I save the function in a separate file in Matlab?? I am new student in Matlab and I want to know ,how to do this? Thanks in advance

Use the editor File->New (Empty File). Paste in the code or type in the code to the new document produced. Save the file.

if you do not have any objection mr.walter ,could you answer me?
I want to ensure and know ,I read sometime in Questions write a function and another Questions write a program
what is the difference between them,I think the function not need to made any program(I mean only write the function that do the operation,not program)??
