MATLAB feature extraction techniques to detect a relatively smaller object

Hi,

I need to detect wire-locks in attached images using MATLAB. Therefore, could anyone please suggest me what are the available feature extraction and pattern recognition techniques for such applications in MATLAB and a rough idea on how to start with?
