Find the medial axis and drawing perpendicular lines to find the shortest perpendicular line for determing the centroid position

I have to find the medial axis for the above chromosome image. After finding the medial axis, i have to draw perpendicular lines to the medial axis and find the shortest perpendicular line that fetches me the position of the centromere. Kindly help me with the matlab code for the same and help me understand the logic.. I am pretty new to Matlab........
