When I type:
syms k c
at the command line, I get the following error:
Error using mupadmex
Error in MuPAD command: .
Error in sym>tomupad (line 1250)
S = mupadmex(numeric2cellstr(x));
Error in sym (line 217)
S.s = tomupad(x);
Error in syms (line 232)
defined = sym(zeros(1, length(args)));
Perhaps it is an installation issue, but it used to work fine. Any ideas?

There is an error that looks like this that shows up only on Catalina.
Note: R2019a is not supported for Catalina.

The solution was to upgrade to 2019b as 2019a does not support Catalina OS. Thanks everyone for the help.
