How do I properly cite IPT demo images?

Such as the cameraman:
  • Can I use him?
  • Do I cite MATLAB and MIT or just MIT?
  • Do I have to ask MIT for permission or is it assumed okay through MATLAB?

 Accepted Answer

The general answer is that you should approach the copyright owner for permission to use sample images in your publications. For Image Processing Toolbox sample images, type this in order to see the copyright information:
>> help imdemos
and see the section at the bottom called "Photo credits." Sample images not listed under Photo credits are copyrighted by MathWorks.
The cameraman image is copyrighted by MIT, and you should approach them for permission to publish it if you need it.

Dear Steve/Sean,
Any chance either of you know how to do this? I would like to request for the permission but have no clue where/how to do so.
Thank you in advance.
Akhil
It turns out that MIT does not know whether it owns Cameraman.
MIT was able to confirm additional ownership rights.

Hello, If I use a sample image copyrighted by MathWorks, do I have to ask for permission? Do I have to approach someone in particular?
Thanks in advance!

I have a question about a similar situation, but it is about the simulink examples given in the Matlab Documentation.
Can any parts of those models be used in design or are they the private property of Matlab because of their Copy Write?
Thanks!
