R2017a was the last release that was supported for MacOS 10.10 (Yosemite)

There is no realistic chance that you can get R2020a to work with Yosemite -- Apple introduced some incompatibilities in some later versions that Mathworks had to adapt to, and the changes are not backwards compatible.

Thanks for the reply. It was most helpful. I've just installed release R2018b and things worked fine.
