What do you mean model? Are you using Simulink instead of MATLAB, and you're double clicking the .mdl icon in Windows manager? What operating system are you using? If in Windows 7 have you tried "Start/Default programs" to set your default version of MATLAB?

In Windows 7, Start -> Control Panel -> Default Programs -> Associate a file type or protocol with a program. Click on .mat in listbox. Click "Change program..." button. Select the version of MATLAB that you want to be the default version when you double-click a mat file. Click OK.
Or you could skip the Control Panel and go there more directly: Start -> Default Programs -> Associate a file type or protocol with a program.
Or you could have Googled "windows 7 default programs" and taken the first hit: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Change-which-programs-Windows-uses-by-default
For XP, see the link I gave in my prior comment.
