The variables editor returns nothing when I attempt to click on the variables in the workspace or use the openvars function. I am using a windows machine. When I hover over the MATLAB icon, two windows appear and one is properly labled as 'Variables', but when I go to click on the window nothing shows up.
I have restarted MATLAB and my computer and I have also reinstalled MATLAB but to no avail. I have had this issue for a few months now and am hoping someone has had a similar issue and knows the solution?
Thanks!

May be you are using clearvars /deleting the variables in your script file at the end of file.
Remove those commands if present at the end of file

Your Windows firewall is possibly configured to block outgoing connections from MATLAB.
MATLAB uses separate processes for some activities that need to exist regardless of what the command window is doing. The activities it uses separate processes for include:
  • doc
  • Simulink interface
  • executing Simulink (or at least some related tasks)
  • variable browser (I think)
  • polyspace
In each case MATLAB needs to be able to connect by using tcp, connecting to the same machine. port numbers are usually near 31415
