following error message when importing data from libre office using following code.
T = readtable ('trial_data.xlsx' , 'range' , 'A2:B18');
Error using readtable (line 245)
Unable to open file 'C:\Users\Owner\Documents\MATLAB\trial_data.xlsx' as a workbook.
Check that the file exists, read access is available, and the file is a valid
spreadsheet file.
Error in Project_example_data_script (line 1)
T = readtable ('trial_data.xlsx' , 'range' , 'A2:B18');
NOTE: i have imported from libre office using .xlsx files successfully before with exactly this syntax and have ensured file is accessible and in correct location

Darn, I forgot that I don't have Excel installed on this boot partition, and my Excel is too old to install in my new OS version.

Your file is destroyed. Neither readtable, nor xlsread not Excel can open it successfully. Some of its parts are valid, as you can see by opening it in 7zip, but some important parts are missing.
You have to recreate the file.
