Why do I get "Error -1001" or "Error 697" when installing or activating MATLAB?

When installing MATLAB, I get one of the following errors after inputting my email address and password:

ERROR: Error -1001: Specified password does not match account. Please re-enter your password.

ERROR: Error 697: Invalid Username or Password

I have confirmed that I can use that email address/password combination on the website, but the activation will not take my credentials.

This error occurs when you have entered in an invalid password for your MathWorks account. To resolve this issue, you can enter your correct password or use the "Forgot Passcode" link to have your password reset.
