The simulations in this study are conducted on the IEEE 13, 33, and 123 bus distribution systems. Photovoltaic (PV) systems and energy storage devices (ESDs) are added to several busses in the systems or to low-voltage grids attached to them, referred to as local communities in this paper. Real data on sun irradiation and load curve behavior is used to model the PV yield and load characteristics. In the IEEE 13 and 123 bus test systems with unbalanced characteristics, each PV or ESD is connected to a bus in the system, while in the balanced IEEE 33 bus system, the PV and ESD are connected to a local community attached to a bus in the system. The local community used in the simulations is the Aardehuizen community in Olst, the Netherlands, consisting of 23 residential houses and one communal building that aims to meet its energy needs using sustainable sources such as PV panels. The optimal sizes of the PV units and ESDs for this community are determined through a multi-objective optimization problem and the resulting Pareto solutions are used to model different local communities attached to the 33 bus system.
