PFC with buck converter
Version 1.0.0 (36.9 KB) by
Abdelrahman Farghly
While boost converters are more common for PFC applications, buck converters can also be used for Power Factor Correction in special cases
Working Principle
The buck PFC converter works as:
- A step-down converter that operates in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) or continuous conduction mode (CCM).
- It shapes the input current to follow the input AC voltage (to improve power factor).
- Controlled using:
- Average current mode control (digital/analog)
- Hysteresis current control
- PI-based voltage loop for output regulation
