i have a function sin^2xcos(y)/(x^3+1) and i want to get the derivative with respect to x where x varies from 0 to 5 and y varies from 0 to 4 i tried
>> x=[0,5];
>> y=[0,4];
>> ployder (((sin(x)).^2 * cos(y))/(x^3 +1))

You mistyped poyder. Plus, it only applies to polynomials and rational functions of a single variable. You should consider the Symbolic Math Toolbox if you have it. I believe the diff() command would be the thing for this.
