pathdef as a global variable

Hi All,
Ubuntu, R2014a:
When I open Matlab from my home directory, it reads the pathdef.m file and loads all my paths. When I open Matlab from any other directory, it fails to read pathdef.m and loads only the default paths. I know my bash profile can be configured such that pathdef.m loads no matter where I start Matlab from. Any ideas how to make this a global variable? thanks!
