I am trying to solve a quite complicated equation using Matlab and specifically with the following command:

(there are 4 more similar equations) In the end, all of them have a variable called z1 which is not something I set in the model. I wanted to know why they are in that form and they are not just usual expressions (what is the z1 and why they are the same with the only difference coming from the last part of them: z1,1...z2,2...etc).

Hi Myrto
you have a sixth degree polynomial to solve and find the roots. However, there are no algebraic solutions for the roots of a polynomial past the fourth degree. The result is telling you that the solutions are the six roots of the polynomial (hence index 1 .. 6 at the end of each line) but syms can't say what they are. Time for numeric solutions.
