There are a lot of ways. They just require some creativity. Here is one approach.
names = categorical(["Mike","Mike","Mike","John","Lissa","Mike","John","John","John","John","Lissa"]);
nums = [1,2,3,5,6,7,8,9,18,51,88];
G = findgroups(names);
gscatter(G,nums,names)
xticks(unique(G))
