How to create a new figure with axes without using GUIDE? I want to know the command that I should use for this? Could anyone help?

fignum = figure();
axhandle = axes('Parent', fignum);

Thanks Walter. I have one more question. I want to draw a line which is available in another function. How do I draw it in the same defined axes. I used the parent property as follows
l3=line([x0 x2],[y0 y2]);
set(l3,'Parent',mainax,'linewidth',l_wid,'color','b');
but it can't identify it because it is in another function. Is there anyway around this?
