Matlab r2011a won't start

Hi, For some reason my Matlab r2011a will no longer start, I see the splash screen briefly, and then it disappears without any warning or anything else, and the application window never appears.
The strange thing is this goes away when I restart my machine. I don't use Matlab that regularly, but have been using serial port connections recently which crashed it out, and ever since it seems to be happening quite a bit.
I have only the following in my startup.m:
p = path; path(p,'F:\Projects\Matlab'); cd F:\Projects\Matlab;
Any ideas? Many thanks!
Matt

The F:\Projects\Matlab makes me guess you are using a version of Windows (which one or what OS)? What version of java are you running? Is your license valid? What happens if you try and start without the JVM or desktop (look at the help for the startup flags).
