I bought a student license today. I downloaded and installed R2016b w/o any problem. However, every single time I make a search for documentation or check for updates, MATLAB stops working immediately and does not respond any more. Also, it doesn't even return any dialog or error box on screen. Just freezes! So, I have to force quitting. Here are my version info and system info.

I do not appear to have this difficulty on R2016b on my El Capitan system. I am not using a Student license, though.
Are you possibly using a proxy connection to the internet?

You could try using the online documentation available at this link: http://www.mathworks.com/help/releases/R2016b/index.html
Further, since this is recent install, this could potentially be caused due to a corrupt installation. I recommend you try uninstalling and reinstalling MATLAB R2016b.
