Can't connect Arduino Uno to Matlab R2016a (Mac)

Whenever I try to establish a connection from matlab with my arduino uno with the prompt:
a = arduino
an error message appears that says the following:
Cannot program board Uno (/dev/tty.usbmodem1411).
Please make sure the board is supported and the port and board type are correct.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled the support software, I've reset the Arduino and cleared everything within the command window. I've tried looking up the port and board type in the simulink application and put it in the form of:
a = arduino('port' , 'board');
But the same message appears no matter what I put in. What else can I try?
