What is this stack trace and what can I do to avoid it?

I am currently doing a project in which I have to be graphing and analyzing a lot of data. I am running Matlab through bash for this. When I first start the application, everything usually works fine, but after some time or some number of graphs (I have not been able to pinpoint which it is), my graphs 'stop working.' That is, a figure window is displayed but I receive a long stack trace in my Command Window. On these figures, no data is plotted, and it is completely grey; I do not see a 'File' drop down menu until I move my cursor where it would be.

Hi Cole,

I'd need more info about your environment to accurately respond. The crash here basically is that X11 has run out of resources. This could happen for various reasons, like having a lot of figures/axes open at once.

You might want to call MathWorks Technical Support to help you out. Based on the version of MATLAB that you're running and the OS and hardware you're running on, they may be able to help you work around the problem.

I have the same problem very often. I'm using R2016b on windows 10 with 32Gb RAM and using 8Gb for the java heap memory on Matlab

Hi, Some further information from my experience.

This usually happens to me when in multi desktop environment and after running for some time (no excessive data or figures however, IMO).

This just happened again but just a minute or so after starting MATLAB. I didn't run a script yet. This is also after a clean boot (however with several firefox / chrome sites back up).

So I am not sure this is entirely correlated with X11 resources.

2018b. Ubuntu 16.04.

This isn't really an answer to the why of the question, but I can agree that this is a common problem (in my experience, at least) when running matlab over an ssh connection with X11 forwarding. Is that what you mean when you say you're running through bash?

I don't have a great solution... my usual workaround is to run in -nodesktop mode, which eliminates the Matlab GUI and therefore greatly reduces the resources X11 needs.
