When attempting to plot something very simple like:
>> plot([1 2 3 4 5],[3 10 49 59 100])
MATLAB returns:
"unexpected fl::except::IInternalException"
Is this related to this version being a Trial Version? Why can't I plot? I have been unable to find any other questions/answers related to this issue. Thanks.

Please show the output of
opengl info
I suspect a graphics driver problem, especially if you are using Linux or are using Windows with HD2000 graphics card

See the FAQ: http://matlab.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ#After_installation.2C_MATLAB_crashes_or_gives_an_error_message_when_I_try_to_run_MATLAB.
With trial versions you get free telephone tech support.
Also, send in the crash report when it asks you to.

Well, for me, it happened due to the graphics driver issue. The OS is ubuntu 16.04 LTS. To solve this problem, type:
opengl info
There, Matlab will give you low-level graphics troubleshooting methods.
The method of starting Matlab with software OpenGL solved my problem:
rik@ideapad:~$ matlab -softwareopengl
