g=[1 1;1 1]
mean of matrix is the sum of each column divied by number of elements in it
so in this case mean of matrix is a 1*2 matrix

You are asking for the meaning of the operator | , not for the mean() of a matrix.
a = [ 3 4 ; 5 6 ]
b = [ 1 0 ; 0 1 ]
g = a|b
The result is:
g = [1,1; ...
1,1]
and the operator | is the same as or(): Reply 1, if either the element of a or the element of b is not 0.
