It means that the lfnewton routine used the \ (matrix left divide) operator to calculate directions, but the matrix on the left side is singular. https://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/answers/318736-i-get-warning-matrix-is-singular-close-to-singular-or-badly-scaled-results-may-be-inaccurate-rco#comment_417793

Or possibly the calculation of the terms overflowed, leading to infinities that tried to cancel, leading to a nan output.
