is it possible to create Geolocation shape (shp) file using matlab?

I have a column of lat/long values. Is it possible to make a .shp file using matlab from these values in column? Kindly explain the method to do so without arcgis software or other s/w.

If you have the Mapping Toolbox you can use shapewrite.
