How to assign a input number

Hi, I was new in matlab, I was doing a convert function, I have face a problem which is dont know how to key in a number to the function

What exactly does "how to key in a number to the function" mean?

or

x = 10

data = cuberoot(x)

function value = cuberoot(x)

value = x.^(1/3)

end
