use the commande 'print'
example ,
figure, plot(randn(100,1));
print(figure(1),'C:\users\.......\your_image.jpg');

imwrite works for images, if you want save an image , any function that start with 'im' is likely for images manpulations

Please see the FAQ: http://matlab.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ#How_do_I_save_my_figure.2C_axes.2C_or_image.3F_I.27m_having_trouble_with_the_built_in_MATLAB_functions. Basically, use just export_fig() like most everyone else does (it's the most downloaded File Exchange submission ever, and for good reason).
