I am currently using an older version of Matlab for students (25 licenses) and was wondering if they will have to be updated or if we can go a few more months without updating. if so what is the downside of not updating?

If you're refering to updating a license that is about to expire, yes, you'll need to update.
If you're refering to updating an existing, licensed installation, you do not have to update (instructions). The downside is that it won't support features released after the version you're using.

Hi,
You can use existing version of your MATLAB without updating, but you can't use the features released in later versions.

I read it the other way around, as they used the same wording as your second paragraph, indicating that it is not a matter of their license expiring.
