Dot indexing is not supported for variables of this type

1 view (last 30 days)
hi
i just want to open help > check for updates and this error pops up:
Dot indexing is not supported for variables of this type.
(Other things aren't working either but I could imagine that it all relates to the same issue.)
Thanks and kind regards

Hi Mandana,
Could you tell me the steps to reproduce this error? If possible, also share the screenshot of the error you are facing.

Hi Gaurav
There's not much to reproduce. I open Matlab and would like to check for updates then this error comes up.
Thanks for the help!

You may try executing the following command
rehash toolboxcache
If that doesn't help, provide the following information that might help in understanding the issue
  • I think possibly there has been some of your own code or mex function with the same name similar to the ones that ships with MATLAB and is needed for Check For Updates. Can you provide the list of what's on your MATLAB path?
  • There can be some basic MATLAB commands being replaced by your files with similar names, or the installation itself can be corrupted. So can you provide the installation log file? Here is a link on how to find installation log file.

the rehash command gave this warning:
Warning: Function labindex has the same name as a MATLAB builtin. We suggest you rename the
function to avoid a potential name conflict.
Warning: Function numlabs has the same name as a MATLAB builtin. We suggest you rename the
function to avoid a potential name conflict.
and it still didn't work.
Please find attached my path list (its just MATLAB stuff). Also my installation log file ( im not sure though if i did it correctly).

If you have any custom functions that match the same name as built-in functions you could be getting these messages. Matlab might be calling some built-in functions when you click on help to check for updates. But you have functions named the same as few built-in functions like labindex and numlabs. You might need to rename those functions and then execute rehash toolboxcache.
