Version 2013a very slow importing data

I've just upgraded from 2012 to 2013a. I use 'importdata' to read in data from a lab experiment - typically 150 files, each with 20000 records.
In version 2012 the import took about 12 seconds. Version 2013a running identical code on same machine is taking 51 seconds. These results are repeatable within a second or two.
Anyone know why the latest Matlab is sunning so slow, and any ideas how to speed it up?

I'm also having trouble reading files. I agree with David, reading the same file takes almost 4-5 times longer in Matlab 2013 than Matlab 2012. For relatively smaller files I used to drag and drop to workspace and M2012 would instantly load it. Even dragging and dropping (which usually takes less time than importing) in M2013 is a hassle..
I experience slowness in startup as well. I read a few suggestions that included disabling some features during starup but they didn't improve the process appreciably.
